Publishing a good article doesn’t mean anyone will ever see it. Search engines have to figure out what your page is about, whether it answers someone’s search, and whether it’s worth putting in front of them instead of the thousands of other pages that might answer the same question.

That’s where SEO comes in.

We use descriptive titles. We identify key phrases people might actually search for. We write meta descriptions. We use headings to organize information. We link related content. We give images useful alt text. We try to make pages load reasonably quickly and work properly on phones.

ood SEO is simply good communication.

But then there’s the score.

My Headline Analyzer Has Opinions

I use the MonsterInsights Headline Analyzer to help me write headlines.

It’s a useful tool. You type in a proposed headline, and the analyzer gives it a score out of 100. Then it breaks down what’s working—and what it thinks isn’t.

It looks at the balance of ordinary words, uncommon words, emotional words, and what it calls power words. It considers the headline’s sentiment and type. It checks its length, both in words and characters, and even looks at the words you’ve chosen for the beginning and end.

And then it gives you the part that every writer understands immediately:

A color.

Red and orange is bad.

Green is good.

You can know intellectually that the score is simply an automated analysis of one possible headline. But put a red score beside something I’ve written and suddenly we’re negotiating.

70 is the magic number. That’s the minimum score to turn the analysis green.

And 70 is not easy to reach.

A perfectly sensible headline can sit there in the 50s or 60s, glaring red at you, muttering that you need to call your mother. So, you start tinkering.

Maybe it needs an emotional word.

Maybe it needs a power word.

Maybe the word balance is wrong.

Maybe the title is too long.

Maybe it’s too short.

You change one word and gain four points.

Excellent!

Change another and lose six.

Put the first word back.

Eventually, writing a headline starts feeling less like writing and more like trying to open a combination lock.

Writing for Three Audiences

When you’re optimizing a blog post, you’re really writing for three different audiences.

There’s your reader, who wants something interesting enough to click and worthwhile enough to read.

There’s the search engine, which needs enough information to understand what you’ve written.

And then there’s your SEO tool, sitting there with a clipboard.

Your keyphrase isn’t close enough to the beginning.

Fine.

Your headline needs an emotional word.

Fine.

Perhaps you should add a power word.

FINE.

Your headline is now too long.

You were the one who made me put all this dreck in there.

SEO Is Constraint Writing

Writers already understand constraints.

A sonnet has fourteen lines. A haiku has a particular structure. A romance has genre expectations. A magazine may give you a word count. Social media platforms impose character limits.

SEO creates another set of constraints.

Can I tell the search engine what this article is about without making the headline sound ridiculous?

Can I use my key phrase naturally without repeating it until my prose sounds like it was written by someone being paid three cents a word in 2007?

Can I make the title intriguing to a human while still making its subject comprehensible to a machine?

Can I get the little indicator into respectable territory without sacrificing my own voice?

That’s the art.

The Highest Score Isn’t Necessarily the Best Headline

This is where bloggers can get into trouble.

Once software gives us a numerical score, we instinctively want to improve it.

Seventy-three?

Surely I can get 80.

And if I can get 80, maybe I can get 90.

Before long, you’re changing perfectly natural sentences because a piece of software doesn’t approve of them.

You may eventually achieve a magnificent score.

You may also end up with something like:

AI Artificial Intelligence Boomer Sarcasm HTML Dystopian Short Story | Beth Turnage

SEO score: Fabulous.

Human desire to click it: considerably less fabulous.

Because the analyzer isn’t the person you’re ultimately writing for.

A Score is a Diagnostic, Not An Editor

A headline-analyzer score isn’t a grade handed down by Google. It’s a tool designed to help you evaluate a headline and improve its potential to attract readers. That’s useful information, but it isn’t the final authority on whether a headline works.

If the software indicates my title doesn’t give search engines any indication of what the article contains, that’s useful information.

If I’ve forgotten a meta description, that’s useful.

If my headings are a mess, my images don’t have alt text, or I’ve somehow written 1,500 words without making the article’s subject clear, I want to know.

The Secret Sauce: Crafting Your Headline

Get your tools together.

1.) Know your high-value keywords. For astrology content, high-value keywords are broad, frequently searched terms that keep posts discoverable across multiple social media platforms, rather than targeting narrow topics. A strong core set is #Astrology #Zodiac #ZodiacSigns #Horoscope #BirthChart. Use these as foundation tags, and replace one or two with subject-specific terms such as #Moon, #FullMoon, #Venus, or #MercuryRetrograde when they are more relevant to the post.

2.) Pay particular attention to the beginning and end of your headline. The Monster insights analyzer specifically evaluates those positions because readers tend to notice them prominently. I try to put at least one high-value keyword in the first two words. In the final three, I look for a combination of a power word, an emotion word, and the post subject.

3.) Don’t forget to add at least one common word. A preposition will do. Uncommon words help but shouldn’t overpower the character or word length of the title.

4.) Keep your character count (including spaces) at 55 characters and around six words.

5.) Set a deadline to write your headline. Get it green-lit, set it, forget it, and let SEO do its magic.

6.) Hashtags? Beth, you use hashtags in your headlines?

You don’t need to. Because I auto-post my blogs to Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and Tumblr, the in-headline hashtags give me keywords to direct my posts.

Yes. I Optimized the Headline of this Post

Of course, I ran this article’s headline through the analyzer, too.

I eventually came up with:

#Blogging #Astrology: Great SEO Tips to The Rescue

The Monster Insights Headline Analyzer gave it an 88.

Apparently, I’ve learned how to please my mechanical overlord.

Then continue into the Boomer Detected section.

That makes the final progression even funnier:

And Then My Satire Met My SEO Analyzer

Which brings me to how this article came about.

I had just finished writing a short science-fiction satire called Boomer Detected.

It’s about Professor Halloran, an elderly college professor teaching his students about an ancient period when humans told computers what to do rather than computers constantly telling people what they ought to be doing.

Unfortunately, Halloran lives in a world where artificial intelligence monitors his behavior, evaluates his emotional state, measures his sarcasm, and offers helpful corrective guidance whether he wants it.

Then I uploaded the story to WordPress.

Boomer Detected is a perfectly adequate title for a human reader.

For SEO?

Not so much.

It doesn’t tell a search engine—or someone scanning search results—much about what the story actually contains.

So I opened the Monster Insights Headline Analyzer and started playing with the title.

Eventually, I came up with:

Warning! Boomer Need Help. AI Detects High Sarcasm Levels

Score: 73.

Green light.

I’d done it.

The weird thing is, Warning! “Boomer Needs Help is grammatically correct but gets an orange 58. But the ungrammatical Warning! Boomer Need Help gets a green-lit 73.

I’d written a satire about a future in which artificial intelligence constantly evaluates human behavior and tells people how to correct it.

A machine evaluated what I’d written, gave me a colored warning, and told me how I should correct it.

That’s when I realized satire had become irony.

But hey, at least I’m SEO optimized.

And now you can be too.

Images from the Monster Headline Analyzer page are used under US copyright provisions for fair use of low-resolution images.

(Astroblogging) Search Engine Optimization—SEO—is the practice of making your online content easier for search engines to find, understand, and present to people searching for information.
